MAR & COCO at The Brunswick Green
An afternoon of Brazilian Choro, Samba, Jazz & original music
SWEET COCO is a duo project based in Melbourne formed by Maria Lozano (Spain) on Oboe/Vocals, Fabian Aravalés on Nylon Acoustic Guitar (Chile/Brazil) and Humberto Porto (Brazil) on pandeiro.
The sonorous trio explores the classic pieces of the Brazilian repertoire of Choro, Samba & Bossa Nova by adding their personal taste and merging both musical backgrounds into one.
Choro ("cry" or "lament"), also popularly called chorinho ("little cry" or "little lament"), is an instrumental Brazilian popular music genre which originated in 19th century Rio de Janeiro. Despite its name, the music often has a fast and happy rhythm. It is characterized by virtuosity, improvisation and subtle modulations, and is full of syncopation and counterpoint. Choro is considered the first characteristically Brazilian genre of urban popular music.
MAR y MAR (Maria and Marcos) is a duo composing and improvising in the
realms of oboe/voice and electric guitar, drawing on influences from jazz,
classical, and some Latin rhythms amongst many more. As well as playing
their own compositions, they also play homage to some of their heroes,
including music of some of these composers into their repertoire such as Chick Corea and Silvia Perez Cruz.
