Chinese-Australian drummer, arranger, and composer Tommy X. Wu draws on a background in jazz and electronic production. Born in Shanghai and later moving to Melbourne, his music reflects a blend of contemporary improvisation and traditional jazz influences shaped by the music scenes of both cities.

A recent recipient of DownBeat magazine’s Student Music Award for his “Outstanding Composition” Mass Ave 3AM, Wu is currently developing the work into a larger body of music for his forthcoming debut album. He is also the recipient of Jazz Education Network’s 2026 Stanley Kay Scholarship. Alongside his work in jazz, he releases electronic music under the alias TOMY.

As a bandleader, Wu leads the ensemble Tommy Wu & Friends, a project dedicated to engaging the jazz tradition through contemporary composition and improvisation. In 2025, the ensemble undertook a six-city tour across China, presenting original compositions to audiences throughout the country. Since its inception in 2022, the group has brought together musicians of diverse nationalities and has performed across Australia, China, and the United States at venues including JZ Club, Paris Cat Jazz Club, and Wally’s Jazz Cafe.

In 2023, Wu moved to Boston to attend Berklee College of Music, where he was awarded the Quincy Jones Scholarship. He is currently a student in the Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice and has studied Jazz Composition with Greg Hopkins, Ayn Inserto, and Bob Pilkington. As both a sideman and bandleader, he has performed with acclaimed artists including John Fedchock, Miguel Zenón, Christine Jensen, Vicente Archer, Gray Sargent, and Marshall Wood.
